Golf Holiday Rentals Spain

Costa del Sol Food and Drink

This area of the costa del sol is renowned for high quality, low priced, food and drink. As it is a tourist spot for Spanish holiday makers, the majority of restaurants and bars are typically Spanish in nature.  Evening meals are usually served surprisingly late for the average non-Spaniard. Expect the restaurants to start filling up around 9.00pm. There are a host of small bars and restaurants as well as beach cafes, where you can find familiar International cuisine. We have listed, what we consider to be some of the finest restaurants in the area for a traditional Spanish experience.

The Axarqia region is particularly known for its variety of natural food products. Its people are so proud of this that they love to celebrate that fact and invite everyone to taste thier produce.  On this page we have listed the dates of these celebrations. After all we all have to stop playing golf to eat.

Beach Bars

Merenderos and Chiranguitos

These are, for the uninitiated, Beach restaurant/Bars. Chiranguitos are permanent structures whilst the merenderos are taken down at the end of the Season which is from June till September. There are many of these restaurant/bars situated all along the beaches and promenades.

They tend to specialize in fried and griddled fish also fish threaded on bamboo spits (Espetos) cooked in front of burning Olive and Almond wood and the favourites among these fish are freshly caught Sardines and bigger fish, Sea Bass, Pargo, Sargo and many others.

Rompeolas

On The beach in Algorobbo Costa

Every day Pepe the owner is seen, brown as a berry with his straw sun hat cocked at a jaunty angle busy sprinkling rock salt on his fish and threading them onto spits and placing them in front of the fire while his wife Lola is cook and commander in chief in the kitchen.

A typical lunch time meal would be, a jug of a summer time favourite, Tinto del verano (Red wine mixed with La Casera which is a light Lemonade) Gazpacho followed by an espeto of Sardines (usually eight depending on size) or Sea Bass then a plate of fried Squid or Octopus, with Salad followed by a Dessert of Tocino de Cielo which is made from syrup and egg yolks.

Since first putting this info on the site, The beach now has a Paseo running from Torre Del Mar to La Mesquitilla. Rompeolas has now closed the beach merendero and the management have opened a restaurant just off the beach - the name escapes me for now, Immediatly across the road from the new restaurant is Sabastian's, which is great for evening coffee, cake, Ice cream and liquors.

Camping Presa La Viñuela

Carretera A356
Tel: 95 203 0127-26

You may need to reserve a table in this superbly situated country style Restaurant which overlooks, lake Viñela. It also has magnificent views of the mountains beyond. The lake stretches for about 10 miles and lies North of Vélez Málaga. Specialities of the house are it's first class Steaks and Pork cutlets grilled over natural charcoal to your taste. Be warned, you need a large appetite. They also do various oven roasts which must be ordered in advance.

It's been 8 years since I first visited this restaurant and it is still on my agenda for every visit.

El Yate

Calle Saladero Viejo, Torre del Mar.
Tel: 95 254 0774

A must for fish lovers. Thought by some to be the finest fish restaurant/Bar in the Málaga province. A great variety of fish and shell fish, fried or griddled. A good deal of fun and pleasure is to be had, sitting at the bar sampling fish tapas which come free with your drink. El Yate is closed on Wednesdays and tends to have only a limited range on a Monday. I love this bar, it opens from 8.00pm

La Fuente, Casa Manolo

La Colonia del Puerto, Caleta de Vélez.
Tel: 95 255 0747

Great Value. A good selection of fried or griddled fish. When speaking to the owners, Maria or her husband, Manolo ask for their Choto (Goat) in Almond Sauce ....it's a must. Casa Manolo has a large selection to suit all tastes and also makes, what I consider to be, the best chips for miles.

Elegant surroundings, food prepared with imagination and style. Yummy desserts.
A good wine list. El Chicle is not a cheap restaurant, In 2006 I paid 50 euros ahead for a meal, admittedly It was superb and to my mind worth every penny.

Paseo Marítimo Pablo Ruiz Picasso, 12
Málaga.
Tel: 95 260 1914

A pleasant drive to Málaga along the Paseo Marítimo there to rendez-vous with the owner, Adolfo Canseco. He greets you at the bar where you can discuss tonight's meal over an aperitif (provided you speak Spanish of course). You will then be shown to your table in the restaurant's very elegant surroundings. Try his, De Gustacion or Fillet of Beef oven baked in Rock Salt. Dishes are finely presented, prepared and served with an eye to detail. Excellent Desserts and a first class wine list.
A must if you are looking for something special. The De Gustacion plus a bottle of wine and deserts cost around 60 Euros per head in 2006.

Museo Del Vino

Calle Constitucion
Cómpeta.
Tel: 95 255 3314

Not far from Caleta going East along the coastal road turn left at the first round-a-bout and go North on the, MA111 for Cómpeta passing Algarrobo and Sayalonga. This route takes in some of the loveliest part of the hilly countryside. Cómpeta is a beautiful White Village with lots of narrow streets. There is a central car park.
Enter the Restaurant by descending stairs from the pavement outside. Once in you take in the old rustic ambience. Originally a wine cellar it has now been converted to house a restaurant, Bar and a shop for local products including, cold meats, sausages, black puddings etc., honey, dried figs Olive Oil, ceramics, rugs and of course wine. Here you can buy some of the most superb Muscatel wines to compare with the noble, Beaune-de-Venise of France.
The menu, of the local variety, is good but their Rabbit cooked in olive oil and garlic is just magic.
